Ruth’s inspiring fitness journey at Body Torque Gym
Starting a fitness journey can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never walked into a gym and feel like you didn’t belong. For many women, the idea of strength training or joining a gym brings up fears of judgment, confusion, or simply not feeling “fit enough” to begin. Ruth’s story is a powerful reminder that everyone starts somewhere, and with the right support, the results can be life changing.
When Ruth first started looking for a gym in Newmarket, she wasn’t just seeking weight loss, she was looking to reconnect with herself. After years of putting her own needs last, she found Body Torque, a welcoming strength-based gym designed to support people of all fitness levels including women who are ready to reclaim their confidence, energy, and wellbeing.
In this Q&A style blog, Ruth shares her honest reflections about what it was like before joining, how she overcame early doubts, and why Body Torque’s inclusive and personalised approach stood out from other Auckland gyms. Whether you’re just starting out or thinking about returning to fitness, Ruth’s transformation might be the inspiration you need to take that first step.
Before Joining Body Torque Gym
What prompted you to start looking for a gym?
I was at a point where I felt disconnected from my body and my confidence. I wanted to feel strong, not just physically, but emotionally too. I knew I needed to do something different, and I wanted more than just weight loss. I wanted strength, energy, and confidence as well.
Did you have any specific goals or concerns before starting (including any injuries)?
My main goal was to feel stronger and more in control of my body. I wasn’t aiming for a number on the scales. I just wanted to feel like myself again. I had no injuries, but I was dealing with years of putting myself last.
What was your fitness level and routine like before joining?
Non-existent! Other than walking, I wasn’t doing much, and the thought of “getting fit” felt overwhelming. It was hard to imagine ever walking into a gym, let alone lifting weights.
How did you feel about exercise and health back then?
Exercise felt like something other people did. I associated it with punishment or pressure, not with self-love or growth.
Had you been to a gym before? If so, how long ago? What were your thoughts about gyms in general back then?
I’d done a few classes here and there, years ago, but nothing stuck. Gyms felt intimidating and impersonal, like you were on your own unless you already knew what you were doing.
Did the thought of going to a gym make you feel uncomfortable and if so, why?
Absolutely. I didn’t feel like I belonged. I was worried about being judged, not knowing what I was doing, or just looking like I didn’t fit in.
Were there any obstacles that made it difficult for you to get started?
My own mindset was the biggest obstacle. I had to fight the belief that I wasn’t ready or fit enough to start. Plus, like many women, I was juggling work, family, and a full plate. Making time for myself wasn’t something I was used to.
Ruth’s journey at the gym
There are lots of gyms in Auckland. Why did you choose Body Torque Gym in Newmarket?
I’d seen Alex on Match Fit and could tell he knew his stuff! When I started working in Newmarket, I looked around to see what gyms were local. I didn’t want to join a commercial gym as I knew I wouldn’t like it, so I bit the bullet and sent Alex an enquiry on the website.
Tell us about the onboarding process?
It was supportive and really thorough. From the beginning, I felt like Alex and Phil genuinely cared about where I was starting from and where I wanted to go. Everything was explained, and I never felt rushed or judged.
How did you feel walking into Body Torque on your first day and why?
I felt extremely intimidated. I thought it would be a testosterone filled environment with big burly blokes working out, but I was pleasantly surprised. The vibe felt different straight away, more personal, more grounded, and genuinely welcoming. No egos, no gimmicks. Just real people doing real work. Alex made me feel like, “You’re allowed to be here.”
What were your first impressions of the gym, the community, and the quality of training?
I was surprised at how friendly and inclusive it was. There was no ego, no intimidation. The community was warm, not cliquey. The training was top-tier, hands-on, encouraging, and smart. Alex and Phil made things feel possible, even when it all felt new.
Did you face any challenges or setbacks since joining Body Torque and if so, how did you overcome them?
Of course, because motivation has its ups and downs, but I kept showing up, even when it was hard. The consistency, plus the unwavering support from Alex and Phil, helped me push through.
Do you have a MyZone Heart Rate Monitor and if so, how have you found that helpful?
Yes, and I love it. It gives me instant feedback and helps me train smarter.
What kept you motivated and committed to your fitness journey?
How I started to feel, which is strong, energised, and proud. Once I realised I was doing this for me, it became a gift I gave myself, not a chore. And honestly, Alex and Phil believed in me before I fully believed in myself.
How has your routine evolved since you first joined?
I went from barely moving to training six days a week. It’s second nature now, like brushing my teeth. I look forward to it and miss it when I don’t go!
Have you had any standout moments or achievements at the gym?
So many! Deadlifting 90kg was a massive moment. But honestly, the real achievement has been the quiet inner shift. I now feel capable, self-assured, and confident.
The difference Body Torque made to Ruth’s life
Did you take advantage of the Body Torque Intel Services?
Yes, and I am stoked that I did because I can objectively measure my progress versus when I first started. Here is a summary of the numbers I am most proud of:
🧬 Metabolic Age: 30 (vs. real age 45) ⚖️ -10kg Weight 💪 +6% Muscle Mass 🔥 -40% Visceral Fat
How do you feel now compared to when you first started?
Like I’ve come home to myself. I’m stronger in every way. Physically, emotionally, and mentally. I now have a level of confidence that has changed how I show up in every part of my life.
What physical or mental changes have you noticed in yourself?
I’ve lost weight, gained muscle, and my energy levels have skyrocketed. But mentally, I’m calmer, more focused, and genuinely happy.
Has joining the gym impacted other areas of your life, like new friendships, confidence, energy levels, physical strength, sleep, stress levels etc?
Absolutely. It’s transformed my relationship with myself, and it’s rippled out into every other part of my life including my work, parenting, and friendships. I also sleep better, stress less, and carry myself with pride now.
Do you notice any differences in your mindset or day-to-day habits now compared to before?
100%. I prioritise myself now. I fuel my body properly, I don’t skip workouts, and I speak to myself with way more kindness. I show up for myself every day.
If you could go back and give advice to your past self, what would you say?
You don’t need to wait to be ready, just start. You are more capable than you think. Show up scared if you have to. You’ll be amazed at who you become.
What’s next for you on your fitness journey?
I’m considering a personal training course. Fitness has become such a big part of my life that I’d love to help other women who feel stuck and remind them what’s possible.
You’ve been a member of Body Torque for two years, what do you think makes Body Torque different to other gyms around Auckland?
Alex and Phil make Body Torque different. They have created an amazing supportive community. Our workouts are all mapped out for us so there’s no stress about planning your own training regime. It’s not a production line, it’s personal, supportive, and genuinely life changing. I’ve never felt like just a number.
What would you say to women who feel intimidated by the idea of starting their fitness journey?
I get it. I was you. But you’re braver than you think. Start small, start scared, just start. You deserve to feel strong and alive in your body, and it’s never too late. You are worthy of feeling strong, seen, and proud of yourself.
